An Objective Voters Registration Exercise a Prelude to Free and Fair Election

The voters registration exercise for the 2011 general elections begun as scheduled on Saturday the 15th of January 2011, the exercise which started throughout the 774 local governments areas in Nigeria simultaneously, though a good number of the 120,000 registration units are yet to be deployed with the direct data capturing (DDC) machine to be used for the registration exercise.

The Chairman of the independent national electoral commission (INEC) recently made it clear that all registrations carried out without the thumbprint of an eligible voter would be disqualified, null and void, this is in a quick response to the recent uproar from various parts of the country from concerned Nigerian electorates who are crying out loud against the emergence of registration of individuals without capturing their thumbprint in some registration venues.

Many Nigerians both at home and Diaspora have high expectation that this would be a new dawn in the electoral process in Nigeria, these expectations or assumptions we are hopeful will not end up like what we have had in the past for those who are familiar with the history of Nigeria democracy and political lifetime, more or less in this fourth republic.

It is therefore very pertinent that the leadership of this country and INEC as the body that have been saddled with this greater task of conducting a free and fair election in our country Nigeria in order to elect leaders whose official duties would be carried out without tenures being characterized by lingering court cases, situation which sometimes keep the ‘erroneously’ elected politician in office for more than 80 percent of the total tenure duration for that office. A typical example is a cited case of the Anambra North Senatorial district seat for 2007-2011 as decided by the Appeal court in Enugu who upheld the victory of Chief Alphonsus Obi Igbeke (Ubanesse).

Nigerians of sensitive nature like the writer do believe that Prof. Jega has been given the opportunity to cause a revolution in the political history in Nigeria by ensuring proper registration, collation and use of accurate data from the ongoing voters registration exercise using world class E-Voting registration system, without any undue influence from any quarters.

The use of corps members has been perceived by Nigerians as complimentary effort of the present government not to involve untrained individuals into the system but to associate with the practice of excellence by involving supposedly trained individuals.

This is therefore a clarion call on the corps members to ensure that they preserve the future of this country and their integrity as well, by an act of diligence and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, as they were lead to oat on their swearing-in-ceremony at the various orientation camps in the country.

Long live INEC!!!
Long live NATIONAL MANDATE (POLITICAL MANDATE OF DE NORSEMEN KLUB INTERNATIONAL)!!!
Long live FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!!!
